Her lecture will describe the history of the U.S. Public Health Service Narcotic Hospital located on Leestown Road, Lexington, Kentucky. The U.S. Narcotic Farm (also known as the first drug abuse treatment center in the U.S.), in addition to serving as a prison, was the premiere laboratory conducting research on drug dependence disorders (and the predecessor to the modern-day Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse). Dr. Campbell, has conducted extensive research into the history of the Lexington Narcotics Farm and the history of addiction science. Follow-up discussion with Dr. Campbell, JP Olsen and Luke Walden (co-authors of the book creators of the film, “The Narcotic Farm”) will follow.
